Dear Diary

From the diary of Evelyn Hill, fourth grade teacher, Brickman Elementary, Hilliard, MS:

Dear diary,

Today our principal came to a before-school meeting to talk with us teachers about new programs that we have to start planning for. I can’t believe it but he says that we will soon have standardized textbooks in the classroom-with books for every student. He also said that each teacher must speak to each pupil to see who has had medical care in the past. Believe it or not, some of these kids have never seen a dentist! He said that we would also be shuffling students with two other schools not very far from us who had previously had their students bused to them. There are new boundary lines of areas where students must attend school within the defined area they live in instead of being bussed to schools because of color, both white and black. On the news tonight I saw some things that back up what he’s saying as far as families being able to get more money when their fathers are unemployed and and more benefits for single moms, of which my classroom has a number. They were also talking in the news about being much more vigilant about our air and water quality. That would be great because I know that a lot of the students complain of stomach aches and I know 90% of their meal before class was a glass of water. I only hope they are not going to raise our taxes again.
Sincerely,
Evelyn Hill, one of many from the Great Society
